Capability 09 · Digital Assurance

Confidence that systems behave as intended — including under pressure.

Digital Assurance brings testing, security hardening and access control together, so quality and security are verified continuously rather than inspected once before launch.

Business purpose

Reduce the likelihood and impact of defects, outages and security incidents, and make it easier to answer due-diligence questions.

Operational problems addressed

Signs this capability is needed.

  1. P1Releases regularly introduce regressions in unrelated areas
  2. P2Testing is manual and squeezed in at the end
  3. P3Former staff and contractors still have access to systems
  4. P4Security questionnaires from customers are difficult to answer
  5. P5Dependencies have not been updated in a long time

What this includes

Inside Digital Assurance.

01Test strategy and automation
Unit, integration and end-to-end tests focused on the paths that matter most.
02Application security review
Code and configuration review against common vulnerability categories such as the OWASP Top 10.
03Infrastructure hardening
Network, identity and configuration improvements based on provider security baselines.
04Identity and access management
Single sign-on, least-privilege roles and joiner–mover–leaver processes.
05Dependency and vulnerability management
Automated scanning with a clear process for triage and patching.

Deliverables

  • Assurance assessment and prioritized findings
  • Automated test suites in CI
  • Hardened configuration baselines
  • Access model and review process
  • Security documentation for due-diligence responses

Engagement and delivery

How this work is usually structured.

Engagement options

Delivery approach

  1. 01 · Understand

We assess current testing, access and configuration, then rank findings by likelihood and impact.

  2. 04 · Engineer

High-priority fixes and automated tests are delivered first, so risk drops early.

  3. 06 · Improve

Access reviews and dependency updates become a scheduled routine rather than a one-off project.

Modernizing a fragile digital platform

Modernization

Starting situation

A customer-facing platform built several years ago runs on manually configured servers. Releases are infrequent and nervous; outages are noticed by customers first.

Operational friction

  • Deployments need a specific person and planned downtime
  • Little automated testing, so changes cause regressions
  • No clear view of performance or errors
  • Outdated dependencies with known vulnerabilities

Proposed system

A phased modernization: stabilize with tests and monitoring, move infrastructure to code, automate delivery, then refactor the riskiest parts of the application module by module.

Architecture outline

Experiences

Existing interface retained during transition · Performance improvements on key journeys

Operations

Application modules refactored incrementally · Documented APIs

Intelligence

Error and performance analytics

Foundations

Infrastructure as code · Automated CI/CD · Managed database and backups

Assurance

Automated regression tests · Dependency scanning · Alerting and runbooks

Technologies that may be used

TerraformGitHub Actions or GitLab CIContainers or managed app servicesPlaywrightOpenTelemetry with Grafana or Datadog

Expected categories of improvement

  • Routine, lower-risk releases
  • Problems detected before customers report them
  • Reduced security exposure
  • A codebase that is easier to change

Frequently asked questions

Questions about Digital Assurance.

No. We help you implement and document technical controls, and we can support preparation for audits, but certification is issued by accredited third parties.

It overlaps but is broader. A penetration test is a point-in-time exercise; Digital Assurance builds the ongoing testing, hardening and access practices around it. We can coordinate independent testers where required.

Automated tests usually make releases faster over time, because fewer problems are found late and manual regression checking shrinks.
